Treatment:

Nosebleed — see Chapter 5, page 50. May tranquilize horse lightly if bleeding is not profuse (get veterinary approval first).

Remove halter if it is tight or putting direct pressure on injured area. Pad the halter well before replacing.

Observe for signs of severe respiratory distress, i.e., depression, flared nostrils, or a respiratory rate over 25 breaths per minute at rest.

May give one to three grams of phenylbutazone per 1,000 pounds for pain with your vet’s approval.

Monitor temperature twice daily for seven days. Prophylactic antibiotic coverage (e.g., penicillin) may be started on approval of veterinarian.
